5 Common Fears People Have About Getting Their Photos Taken (And How to Overcome Them)

“It is completely normal to feel nervous before your portrait session. A lot of people experience anxiety when stepping in front of the camera, whether it’s for a family session, senior portraits, or professional headshots. The good news is most fears about getting your picture taken are easy to overcome with a bit of preparation and the right mindset. As a portrait photographer, I’ve worked with many clients who start out uneasy and leave the session feeling confident and happy with their photos.

Here are five common fears I have seen when getting photos taken—and how to overcome them.”

1. “I Always Look Awkward in Photos”

Many people believe they just aren’t photogenic, but that’s rarely the case! Feeling awkward comes from a lack of comfort with posing or being in front of the camera. The key to overcoming this fear is to work with your photographer to help guide you through poses, facial expressions, and even body language.

Solution:

Choose a photographer who makes you feel at ease and offers direction during the session. I always encourage clients to relax and have fun with just being silly, which often leads to the most authentic and flattering photos. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to pose—that’s what I’m here for!

2. “I Don’t Like the Way I Look”

Whether it’s a concern about weight, skin imperfections, or just general insecurities, this fear is extremely common. But remember, a good photographer knows how to highlight your best features and capture you in flattering angles.

Solution:

Talk with us about your concerns ahead of time. As your photographer, I can help guide wardrobe choices, lighting, and poses that bring out your best. Plus, we can discuss light retouching if that’s something you’d like. You’ll be amazed at how the right angles can make all the difference!

3. “I’m Camera Shy”

Being camera shy is nothing to be ashamed of, but it can hold you back from capturing beautiful memories. A lot of clients come in feeling nervous about being the center of attention, especially if they aren’t used to having their photo taken.

Solution:

Start with some candid shots to get comfortable, be silly and have fun in front of the camera. I like to ease clients into the session with casual conversation and some awesome dad jokes, which take the pressure off posing, and might just make you laugh a little. It helps you relax and forget the camera is even there!

4. “I Don’t Know What to Wear”

Another common worry is choosing the right outfit for your portrait session. Your clothes can make or break how you feel in your photos, so it’s understandable to feel unsure.

Solution:

Don’t stress! Opt for clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable, and avoid overly busy patterns. In Michigan, consider the season—layering can be a great option for our unpredictable weather!

5. “I’m Afraid My Photos Won’t Turn Out Well”

This usually comes from past experiences or simply not knowing what to expect. Will the lighting be right? Will I look how I want to? These are valid concerns, but they can be discussed and we can do this together.

Solution:

Trust your photographer! Professional photographers have the skills, tools, and experience to ensure your photos turn out beautifully. I always take the time to adjust lighting, angles, and poses during the shoot to make sure everything comes together perfectly.

Conclusion:

It’s natural to have some fears about getting your portrait taken, but with the right photographer and a little preparation, you can overcome those anxieties and enjoy a fun, relaxed session. As a Michigan portrait photographer, my goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and proud of the images we create together. Ready to book your session?
